In 2010, we demonstrated the world’s-first secure TV conferencing in a metropolitan QKD network with trusted nodes, called the Tokyo QKD Network. Unconditional security is guaranteed by the fundamental laws of physics. QKD allows users to communicate with absolute security by combining it with Vernam’s one-time pad. We discuss our estimates of the performance of a superconducting single photon detector (SSPD) in a high speed quantum key distribution (QKD) system.
